Two bear cubs killed on highway in northern Greece

Two bear cubs were found dead at the Ammochori junction on the Florina-Kozani national highway on Monday morning. Their mother was nearby and refused to go.

The cubs were found by drivers near Florina and suspicion is high that they were killed by a car.

Staff of the bear sanctuary Arctouros were informed and they rushed to the scene. They determined the two animals were from this year’s litter and died following a traffic accident.

Their mother was found a few dozen meters away alive and she may have planned to pick her cubs from the road apparently not realizing that her kids were dead.

Arcturos staff “immediately removed the two dead cubs from the spot to avoid further conflict with the mother, who refused to leave the spot as long as she could see her cubs on the road,” the organization spokesperson Panos Stefanou told state-run news agency amna.gr.
