Poll: Shocking drop for ruling New Democracy, main opposition SYRIZA

Ruling New Democracy remains the first party in voters’ preferences, however, it showed a significant drop, down to 22.2%, while main opposition SYRIZA suffered extensive losses bringing the party down to fifth ranking position, below PASOK, KKE and Greek Solution.

According to the latest public opinion poll conducted by Interview on behalf of politic.gr the results are:

  • ND (conservative) 22.2%
  • PASOK (s0cialist)11.7%
  • KKE (communist) 8.7%
  • Greek Solution (nationalist) 8.8%
  • SYRIZA (left-wing) 8.3%
  • Foni Logikis (nationalists) 4.0%
  • Course of Freedom (left-wing) 3.9%
  • Niki (religious-patriotic) 3.3%
  • Other 11.4%
  • Undecided 16.2%

For ruling New Democracy, the poll results show an increasing disapproval by citizens who face sharp drop of their purchasing power, permanent high prices in food, energy and services, while health and infrastructure seem to collapse day by day. ND was still getting 31.2% in December 2023 in other polls for voters’ intention.

The government does not seem to gain the trust of the citizens, as 79% of the respondents evaluate its work negatively, while only 19% express themselves positively. This widespread dissatisfaction is also reflected in the response of political leaders. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis maintains the first place in popularity with 29.8% positive opinions, however 68.3% of citizens evaluate him negatively.

On the other hand, the new leader of  SYRIZA, Stefanos Kasselakis,  has been stirring the party with the aim to get rid of old party officials and confusing policies that has also traditional voters of the Left to turn their back to the party seeking new political refuge.

Party leaders Dimitris Koutsoumbas (KKE) and Zoe Konstantopoulou (Freedom course) gather 28.2% and 24.7% positive opinions respectively, although both also have high percentages of negative opinions (63.8% and 67.9%).

The highest rates of dissatisfaction are gathered by Nikos Androulakis PASOK (81.6%), Stefanos Kasselakis SYRIZA (81.6%), Kyriakos Velopoulos Greek solution (79%) and Dimitris Natsios Niki (78.8%).

the poll was conducted nationwide among a sample of 2,805 people aged over 17, between August 21-26, 2024.
