Incumbent PASOK-KINAL party leader Nikos Androulakis will face off against Athens Mayor Haris Doukas next Sunday, in the second round of PASOK’s internal party leadership elections.
The first round of election was nail-biting until after Sunday midnight due to the very close race for the 2nd position, between Mayor Haris Doukas and former Culture Minister and current MP Pavlos Geroulanos. Doukas won with a razor-thin margin of just 858 votes.
Based on 100% of the integration and a total of 302,822 votes received:
- Nikos Androulakis: 29.64% and 89,200 votes
- Haris Doukas: 21.41% and 64,490 votes
- Pavlos Geroulanos: 21.12% and 63,632 votes
- Anna Diamantopoulou: 19.52% and 58,899 votes
- Michalis Katrinis: 6.03% and 18,163 votes
- Nadia Giannakopoulou: 2.29% and 6,890 votes
PASOK officials expressed satisfaction with the high voter turnout, as more than 300,000 citizens cast their ballots. By comparison, in the equivalent election process of 2021, where Androulakis was elected president, 270,000 voters participated in the first round.
However, he is determined to fulfill both tasks as Mayor and PASOK leader at the same time and said late on Sunday that the election had sent a “clear” message: “70% are calling for a change in leadership.”
However, as in Attica ranked fourth receiving just 17.93%, he should have been more correct to have said “82% do not want me as PASOK leader” and withdraw from the 2nd round race.
Some analysts predict that Nikos Androulakis will again win the PASOK leadership next Sunday, October 13, although the party decided after the European elections to change its leader due to inadequacy.
