Stunning Aurora Borealis visible in Greece (picts)

An impressive appearance of the northern lights, the Aurora Borealis, in the town of Xanthi, Greece,  on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

The phenomenon, which is rare in Greece, offered a magnificent sight to the residents of the area in north-eastern Greece. The sky was lit up with red and purple hues, creating a mesmerizing backdrop, impressing the locals.

The stunning picture was shot by local man Konstantinos Xynotroulas who posted it on FB group “Weather News Thrace.”

The northern lights have the power to captivate the public’s interest, especially when it appears in areas that are not used to it.

The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are a phenomenon that usually occurs in the polar regions, where charged particles in the solar wind interact with the Earth’s magnetosphere, creating curtains of light in the sky.

However, in rare cases, the phenomenon can also become visible at lower latitudes and it appeared not only in Xanthi but also in other areas of Greece with professional and amateur photographers to shoot stunning pictures.

In a post on FB the Visitors’ Center of the National Observatory of Athens uploaded aurora borealis pictures from Mount Paiko, Hortiatis in Thessaloniki, Moudania in Halkidiki, Plagiari in Thessaloniki, Livadia, Evia, Crete, Lesvos, Corfu, Oropos and Penteli in Attica.

Also in 2023, in November, Aurora Borealis was visible in Greece again most visible in the North of the country.
