A woman who was severely beaten by her partner last month, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday. 41-year-old Gafyfalia from Patras is the second victim of femicide to die in less than 24 hours in Greece.
Garyfalia suffered severe head injuries after her 49-year-old partner brutally beat her on October 3. She was hospitalized in ICU since then and doctors had no hope for her recovery since the beginning.
Despite her heavy grief, her family made the brave decision to give life with the death of their child, proceeding with organ donation, daily tanea.gr reported in the evening.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our Garifallia has lost the difficult and brave battle she was fighting since the early hours of last Monday as we were informed that she has died of a stroke,” the victim’s family said in a statement on Tuesday.
Thanking the medical and nursing personnel in two hospitals in Patras and Athens, the family added:
“In our most difficult and cruel moment, we decided to honor the memory of our Garyfalitsa [little Garyfalia] by offering the possibility of life to other fellow human beings through the donation of her organs. We hope her love and light will continue to live on through them.”
The attack
Garyfallia was attacked on Sunday, Νovember 3rd on Iroon Polytechniou street at the height of Terpsithea in Patras, western Peloponnese. she had left the common apartment after an argument with her partner and moved to a hotel.
The 49-year-old visited her there and lurked her outside. He punched and pushed her, causing the woman to fall to the ground and hit her head on a kerb.
She was urgently transported by ambulance to the hospital, where due to the seriousness of her condition she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and from there to KAT hospital in Athens.
The man was arrested after he was identified and traced from video footage found by police.
Initially, the 49-year-old called the ambulance on his own, claiming that he had found his ex-partner, fallen on the street. However, after investigation, police found out that he was not telling the truth.
The 49-year-old has been remanded in custody on the charge of causing grievous bodily harm, following a unanimous decision by the investigator and the prosecutor.
However, after the tragic development with the unfortunate woman, the indictment against him is expected to change.
Garyfalia is the second victim of femicide to die in Greece in one day, after 43-year-old Dora, a mother of 2, was fatally shot by her former partner in Agrinio, western Greece.
The number of femicide victims in Greece rises to 12 in 2024.
