A 43-year-old mother of three was fatally shot by her former partner in the town of Agrinion, western Greece, late on Monday. The femicide victim was shot in the abdomen in her own car and died a bit later in the hospital despite doctors’ effort to save her life.
Before she died she whispered the name of her former partner.
The 30-year-old perpetrator fled the crime scene. He spent the night hiding in the area and was arrested at noon on Tuesday.
43-year-old victim Dora was mother of three children aged 14, 16 and 18 from a former marriage. she was working as a cook in a catering facility.
According to local media agrinio.gr, before she died in the hospital, she named her former partner as the shooter. His vehicle was located hours later.
On upcoming Friday, the former couple was to meet at the court as the victim had filed against him for an incident of domestic violence last September.
Back then, the man was arrested, while three firearms were found in his possession and confiscated. A court date was set and a restraining order was also issued preventing him from contacting or coming near the woman.
Speaking to news website newsit.gr, her current partner said that the suspect was threatening and harassing the victim as well as him. The couple was about to be engaged.
The suspect’s sister reportedly said that he was unable to deal with the victim’s rejection and he was threatening to take her life. “He was saying that he would do it but we didn’t believe him,” the sister said. she added that he called her after the shooting telling her “I did it, I hit Dora.”
The shooter had connection with the Greek mafia and that he was posting of “upcoming deaths” on social media, tovima.gr reported.
Greece saw an increase of femicide in the last couple of years, forcing the government to adopt measures such as the Panic Button to protect women victims of domestic violence by current or former partners.
Dora was the 8th victim of femicide in 2024.
