Over €35billion in debt to Greek state is “un-collectible”

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) is proceeding with a new round of write-downs of overdue tax debts owed to the state, classifying an additional 6 billion euros as “uncollectible” by the end of 2026.

According to AADE’s operational plan, the bulk of the liabilities to be transferred into the uncollectible category relates to large cases.

Approximately 5.8 billion euros come from individual debts exceeding 1.5 million each, while only 200 million concerns smaller outstanding liabilities.

Based on the latest available data (March 2026), total overdue liabilities to the tax administration total 114.516 billion euros. Of this, 35.264 billion euros, or 30.8% of the total, has already been classified as uncollectible.

Following the addition of a further 6 billion euros by year-end, the uncollectible debt is projected to reach 41.264 billion, accounting for more than 36% of total outstanding liabilities.

  1. I remember that the Germans did not pay any state taxes during their 25 year reign at Athens airport. “Uncollectible” indeed!
