Representatives of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Supermarket Association met Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos on Wednesday.
According to the association, both sides expressed their commitment to supporting Greek households through co-ordinated measures aimed at helping to keep living expenses in check in the coming months.
The also stressed supermarkets’ ongoing efforts to absorb a significant share of inflationary pressures and keep prices as low as possible, despite rising costs linked to geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
In this context, they noted that prices for packaged foods and other consumer goods sold in Greek supermarkets remain significantly below the European average, according to the latest available data.
Note that the move comes as inflation climbed to 5% in May and high prices are the Number One problem for Greek households as the Mitsotakis government cannot get the situation under control and stuggles for a third term of a majority government in the running elections year..

Well this is a suprise really. my daily food shopping has gone up from €6 a day in 2021 to €9 euros a day now so that is I think 60% increase. Sorry but my maths is not good. When I look at more processed foods and foreign items it is much more. things like baked beans, canned soup, canned fish. I am lucky enough to spend part of the year in the tropics and these things are cheaper there. I think the figures are artificially low becasue some items like cigarettes, beer, circulation tax and insurance have stayed relatively low but its hard to know without seeing the basket of products they are comparing. Certainly just food shopping is much more expensive than say UK but they have always had cheap food becaue of competition. There is not much competition in Greek supermarkets brcause they all buy from the same supplier (look at packages meat and canned goods|) and also most of the rest of europe has huge supermarkets fairly close to each other with people doing big shops weekly or monthly, but Greece is mostly smaller supermarketsI have a 20km round trip to lidl otherwiae its just 3 diffeent branches of the same supermarket so its not worth the travel
