Hundreds of dead birds have been spotted on the coastal road of Nafplio – Nea Kios in Argolida, eastern Peloponnese, at midday on Thursday, November 14.
According to local media, the dead birds were spotted by residents of the area who informed authorities.
Many of the dead birds were run over by the wheels of passing vehicles as the coastal road has quite some traffic.
The dead birds are reportedly starlings and samples will be sent to the Ornithological Society to determine the cause of their death.
members of the local authorities said that they had no clue about the mass death.
The competent services of the Regional Unit of Argolida and environmental organizations have been informed about the mass death of the birds and immediately rushed to the area, local argolikeseidisis.gr reported.
The area has a wetland with flourishing fauna and flora due to a river and streams flowing into the gulf of Nea Kios.
So far, no other species in the area seem to have suffered any harm.
UPDATE
I spoke with a friend who lives in the area and told me that locals suspect “human hand” behind the mass death of the birds. She said that starlings “raid” olive trees as they love the ripe, delicate fruit. Now it’s the season where humans start picking the olives form the trees and most likely somebody wanted to save his olive crop.
There is no official statement so far on Friday.
This makes me really sad…and these MFs driving over them as if they are rubbish….Greeks have no heart and feelings!!!
