The Christmas Tree in Greek capital Athens was lit in Syntagma Square early Thursday evening in the presence of hundreds of Athenians and visitors, Mayor Haris Doukas and a music program.
The 20-meter fir came from Taxiarhis, Halkikidi in northern Greece and is adorned with 20,000 LED lights and decoration from recycled plastic to symbolize sustainability.
After the Christmas festivities are over, the tree will be repurposed by the Athens School of Fine Arts for student art projects.
This year’s festive theme draws from classic fairy tales, transforming the square into a whimsical scene with elves and beloved characters like the Nutcracker.
As every year, the Athens Municipality has prepared several Christmas events for young and old, the program is expected to be announced soon.
