A prosecutor in Athens ordered the detention and the temporary hospitalization in a psychiatric hospital of the 47-year-old man who stabbed his 14-year-old dog who to death in Kypseli two days ago. Dog Ira was sick with cancer and had other health issues too due to her age.
Prosecutor and Investigation Officer agreed that the man will stay in the public psychiatric clinic of Dromokaiteio for two months. If the 47-year-old’s mental health is restored, he will be released on the condition of mandatory appearance at the Police Station of his area, twice a month.
He will be allowed to roam free and stab other animals in the streets of Athens, until his trial.
The date of the trial is still to be set.
The defense of the accused for the heinous crime against his dog Ira submitted a request to the judicial officer for the accused to undergo a psychiatric examination and the request that was accepted. The lawyer reportedly submitted also documents that his client suffers from a serious psychical disorder.
According to media, the thug claimed to authorities that he decided to stab his dog to death because he had no money to pay for the dog’s cancer treatment.
The elderly dog succumbed to her heavy injuries 24 hours after the stabbing outside the killer’s home where she had spent her life.
The man was filmed by a passerby as he was stabbing the dog with a knife in the abdomen and he tried to decapitate the poor animal. He threw the bleeding dog into the garbage bin, where another passerby found it.
Police took the dog to a vet hospital, however, despite the vets’ efforts, the poor animal did not make it.
It was the video that helped police located, identify and arrest the man.
Angry crowd outside the Court
While the man was transferred to the investigative office, members of animal welfare organizations and associations had gathered, some of whom declared to the Investigating Authority their support for the charge.
The angry crowd shouted swears at the man and at some point there was a slight tension when some of them attempted to approach and attack him and were pushed back by police officers.

The decision did not calmed down the spirits and there are still calls on social media for vigilantist justice.
It should be recalled that the 47-year-old is also being investigated for the killings of at least 7 to 8 cats and other animals in the area.
His name, his picture with or without the dog as well as his address has been posted by social media users.
