Legendary soccer “General” Mimis Domazos passes away at 83

Legendary professional football player, Mimis Domazos, nicknamed “the General” – Ο Στρατηγός –passed away at the age of 83, two days after his birthday on January 22.

Domazos suffered a heart attack on Wednesday, after he underwent a CT scan in a private diagnostic center in Halandri suburb of Athens. He was advised to rush to a hospital. He collapsed a few minutes later. He was transferred  to the Red Cross Hospital where doctors revived him. He was hospitalized intubated ever since. He died on Friday morning. He had contracted Covid-19 and Flu.

Mimis Domazos is considered to be one of the best footballers that Greece has ever produced. He was famed for his dribbling ability, his creative playstyle, especially his through balls of pinpoint accuracy and his leadership skills. The IFFHS chose him in the best XI of all time of Greek football in 2021.

Ηe ended his glorious career in the summer of 1980 with a record of 536 appearances and 139 goals.

Born in Athens on January 22, 1942, Domazos began his soccer journey playing in the fields near Panathinaikos’ stadium on Alexandras Avenue.

He was regarded as one of Greece’s greatest footballers and he rose to prominence in 1959 when Svetislav Glisovic, the Serbian coach of Panathinaikos, recommended signing him. At just 17 years old, Domazos joined the club, where he would play for almost two decades, from 1959 to 1978.

The pinnacle of his career came in 1971 when he captained Panathinaikos in the European Cup final at Wembley Stadium, where they faced Dutch giants Ajax. The match ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Athens side.

Domazos served as Panathinaikos’ captain for nearly 15 years, winning a total of 13 titles with the club. Between 1978 and 1980, he played for AEK before returning to Panathinaikos to finish his playing career.

Mimis Domazos made 536 league appearances, with Panathinaikos and AEK, and holds the all-time record for the most appearances in Greek soccer.

Despite more than 30 years having passed, he remains at the top of the list. Domazos also earned 50 caps for the Greek national team.

From 1967 to 1979, he was married to popular singer Vicky Moscholiou. He leaves behind a wife, three daughters and grandchildren.
