Student, 20, in Patras dies of meningitis within a few hours

A 20-year-old student of University of Patras died at the hospital on Tuesday, just a few hours after he collapsed and diagnosed with meningitis.

The young man reportedly fell ill with fever and extreme tiredness on Monday and went to the hospital.

His health deteriorated rapidly and he was therefore admitted to intensive care unit where he also died.

Deputy regional health director Anna Mastorakou, the student had contracted  fulminant bacterial meningitis, a rare host reaction to infection characterized by sudden onset, rapid deterioration, and an extremely high mortality rate.

Local health authorities try to trace the contacts of the deceased student in order to contain a possible spread offering to students, teachers and employees of the University of Patras preventive medication.

Monday morning the student had visited the University to participate in Faculty’s exams.

Meningitis was detected in the University of Patras also in winter 2024, where three students were diagnosed with meningitis disease.
