Another operation to return asylum seekers, whose application was definitively rejected, was completed on Wednesday, February 12, the Migration and Asylum Ministry announced.
The operation concerned the repatriation of Georgian nationals, who returned to the country of origin within the framework of the implementation of the national and European migration management rules.
It is the second return operation in the last ten days while more return operations will be held in the near future.
The specific return flight was implemented within the framework of a programme funded by the Migration and Asylum Ministry with the co-fundation of the European Union and is implemented by the International Migration Organisation.
It aims at the voluntary return of 17,000 third countries nationals to their country of origin as well as the offer of assistance for the integration of 1,700 migrants through in-kind aid, for the period from 1 September 2023 to 31 December 2027.
Migration and Asylum Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos noted that Greece “gives priority to guarding national borders, which are also European borders, with the aim of strengthening the sense of security of local societies and for this reason we implement a strict but fair migration policy. The catalyst for this policy is the granting of asylum to those who really deserve it. Those who do not meet the criteria for international protection the return to their home country is the only option.” [amna]
