Just a few hours after the body of missing 39-year-old Vassilis Kalogirou was found in a remote area, his mother, a prosecutor investigating the Tempi tragedy, openly alleged that her son was the victim of a criminal act.
In a shocking post on social media, mother Sofia Kalogiou, the Larissa appeals prosecutor investigating the Tempi train collision, wrote adding a picture of her beloved son from careless days:
“Cheers! I am Vassilis you have been searching for. With God’s grace I found the Paradise and looking at Jesus whom I love very much. You who threw me on the mountains to the wild animals and your mean-tempered boss, what kind of the you will have, I wonder?”
The mother rushed to the spot where the body was found at noon on Monday and confirmed to authorities that the clothes, shoes, eyeglasses found next to the body folded, as well as the keys in his pocket, were those of Vasilis’. His face was unrecognizable due to advanced decomposition.
Later on Monday, Sofia Kalogirou reportedly told authorities that she believed her son was the victim of a criminal act and that someone took him there. She even requested a second forensic report, which is why the forensic team from Thessaloniki rushed to the scene.
The mother’s post stirred the society that has been already angry about the slow progress of Tempi investigation and attempts of cover-up, while many Greeks alleged on social media from the very beginning that Vassilis was murdered due to his mother’s work.
Allegations taken to Parliament
The alleged and shocking suspicion expressed by the Tempi prosecutor was taken the Parliament on Tuesday when MP from Course for Freedom, Alexandros Kazamias, made serious serious insinuations linking the death of the 39-year-old man to the investigations into the Tempi tragedy.
State Minister Makis Voridis outburst challenging Kazamias and telling him:
“Stand up, you fool, and tell us the government killed an innocent man!”
The atmosphere in the Plenary turned extremely toxic Statements of “increasing questions” were made but also when also the leader of SYRIZA, Socrates Famellos, spoke of “increased questions” reportedly hinting to government’s involvement in Kalogirou’s death.
Voridis reacting fiercely, accusing the opposition of “miserable and despicable rhetoric. I wonder how much longer these things, the insinuations and the alleged suspicions can be tolerated.”
Autopsy
According to media reports, the autopsy conducted did not find any evidence on the body that Vassilis Kalogirou was a victim of a crime.
Yet, the results of histological and toxicologial laboratory tests are still due and it will take some weeks until they are out and the autopsy is being completed.
Also the results of a DNA test are due.

The body was in advanced decomposition and had marks from wild animals. Vassilis’ death has been short time – 2 or 3 days – after he went missing.

Vassilis Kalogirou went missing in late evening on December 30, 2024, from the city of Larissa where he was visiting his parents over the Christmas holidays. His body was found 12 km away on February 17, 2025.
Creepy scenarios
Initial scenarios spoke of crime, suicide, accident or pathological reasons as causes of Kalogiou’s death. These scenarios are reportedly are still alive still after the autopsy.
However, hunters who happened to have been in the remote area told media that “there was no body there beginning of February” and that they have walked through several times .
Another weird detail is that his eyeglasses were folded and placed next to his body.
Now, the most creepy conspiracy scenario circulating on social media is that “he was murdered and the perpetrators did not bury the body but left it in the open area so that Tempi investigators get the message.”
It should be recalled that prosecutor Sofia Kalogirou resigned from her post a few days after her son went missing.
