Riots in Athens after big rally in memory of Tempi victims

It was short after the commemoration event for the 57 Tempi victims concluded, when groups of people wearing hoods started to hurl stones, bottles and Molotov cocktail bombs at the building of the Greek Parliament.

According to the Live reporting by state broadcaster ERT, riot police has not intervened, so far. However, it started to fire tear gas around 20 minutes later.

There are reports that a man has fainted and an ambulance is trying to reach him, later a woman fainted and was receiving first aid.

The thousands of protesters tried to abandon the scene as soon as possible, however, this was difficult as there are many elderly and children, and there are few escape ways.

Some managed to escape through the courtyard of the Parliament.

Live from Syntagma

Interesting enough, when the event concluded, police opened the gates of the National Garden so that the huge crowd could empty the area as soon as possible.

There are reports of people trapped between the rioters and police, they suffered from the tear gas and some got also panic attacks.

And to think, that the Greek Police announced yesterday that “police officers in plain cloths will be among the protesters.”

An hour later, the riots keep on going, and there are still protesters on the sides of Syntagma Square.

There are 3 points around the Square, where “anti-authoritarians rioting”, ERT reported at 1;30 p.m., while rioters have moved towards Omonia sq and have set barricades on Panepistimiou Avenue.

It is surprisingly that the ‘rioters in hoods’ are quite a lot of people…

As the “war” between the hoodies and police continues and has moved to Omonia Sq, protesters have returned to Syntagma Square with their hands raised calling on the government to resign.

KTG will update the post when necessary.
