Newly appointed minister in Mitsotakis gov’t resigns after 32 hours

Aristos Doxiadis appointed as Deputy Minister of Development in the latest government reshuffle and sworn in on Friday submitted his resignation to PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Sunday afternoon.

Doxiadis who was minister for 32 hours, explained on social media that he was targeted by the opposition, citing “unethical war with unfounded attacks.” He said further that his resignation decision was made both for “personal peace of mind” and to protect the government from what he described as a “witch hunt.”

From the moment the name of the 74-year-old economist name was announced as minister, both opposition parties PASOK and SYRIZA as well as Greek social media users referred to Doxiadis’ controversial business activities that reportedly include “pending financial issues” worth some 10 million euros  and “conflict of interest” as his ministerial post would have him monitor his own loan of 50 million euros for some projects.

He has a long history of inflammatory and pro-government posts on social media, with the recent ones to target the families of the 57 Tempi victims.

On Monday, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis attempted to soothe the issue saying that “the government was not aware of Doxiadis’ issues and he himself had not informed them accordingly.”

His resignation has been accepted by the Prime Minister, and his replacement is expected to be announced in the coming days.

Meanwhile, another new minister, the Deputy Minister of Energy, Nikos Tsafos, was targeted by SYRIZA and PASOK who reminded the public and the Prime Minister that he had referred to the occupied northern Cyprus with its official name given by Turkey.

Fact is that the Prime Minister has been exposed for his choices and given the occasion he announced tax cuts in the near future.
