All flights between Athens and Heathrow cancelled due to fire

All flights between Athens International Airport and the Heathrow in London have been cancelled on Friday, March 21, after a huge fire at a substation near the London airport knocked out its power, stranding passengers around the world and angering airlines who questioned how such crucial infrastructure could fail.

In a statement, Greek carrier AΕΓΕΑΝ Airlines said that flights A3602 and A3603 flying from and to London’s Heathrow Airport, have been cancelled due to to the shutdown of the airport because of a power outage, caused by a fire in a electrical substation supplying the airport.

All affected passengers will be informed about finding alternative solutions. For any further information, they can contact the call center at +30 210626100, the statement added.

British Airways, which also operates flights between the two airports, said it was “contacting those who are due to travel on Friday via email to advise them of their options.”

“To offer our customers more certainty, we’re offering those booked to travel to or from Heathrow in the coming days (March 21 to March 23 inclusive) flexible options to rebook to a later date for free,” it said, advising travelers to visit the “Manage My Booking” part of their site to see the available options.

Scotland fans Tartan Army stuck in Athens following the side’s 1-0 win over Greece have had to find alternative routes home via Dublin, Milan and Istanbul due to disruption caused by an electrical substation blaze.

“But the Tartan Army remain in good spirits as a result of the side’s victory – with some saying they’ll stay in Greece for a celebration,” a BBC report said.
