Tempi tragedy: Case file against two ministers to be sent to Parliament

The case file for the Tempi train tragedy is expected to be forwarded to Parliament in order to investigate any liabilities of former Transport Ministers Costas Karamanlis (New Democracy) and Christos Spirtzis (SYRIZA).

In accordance with the law on ministerial liability, the Supreme Court prosecutor is expected to immediately forward the case file for the tragic Tempi train accident to Justice Minister, so that the latter can forward it to Parliament, in order to investigate possible responsibilities of two former Infrastructure and Transport Ministers due to inadequate supervision by the RAS and OSE regarding the safe operation of the rail transport, media reported on Monday.

Investigated are also to be the reasons as to why the “contract 717” about the railway safety and modernization was not implemented.

The case file reportedly includes memos sent to the ministry short before the tragedy on February 26, 2023, in which railway workers warned of gaps in safety systems due to poor maintenance and reduced personnel.

According to the procedures, when the case file reaches the Parliament, a committee of inquiry is to be set.

Meanwhile, the government is preparing a bill on the safety and modernization of the railways. The bill is based on two pillars. The first will include regulations aimed at the safety and modernization of the railway network, while the second will concern the personnel.

Among others, a new company “New Greek Railways” will be created, where OSE, GAIA OSE and ERGOSE will merge. The company will operate on private-economic criteria, based on the model of the Greek Public Power Corporation.

PS Two years and two months after the train crash killed 57 people in Tempi and the conservative Mitsotakis government is finally making serious moves. Better late than never.

The government and especially the Prime Minister came under immense pressure with huge protests to demand Justice for the victims and accusations of cover up.
