Authorities in Greece imposed a sailing ban from the ports of Piraeus, Lavrio, Rafina and Agia Marina-Nea Styra early on Friday morning due to gale-force northern winds. Ferries in the Saronic Gulf operate as usually.
The sailing ban left thousands of travelers stranded at the port of Piraeus early Friday morning, as there was no information in due time.

According to state broadcaster ERT, passengers scheduled on the 6.45 a.m. ferry to the Cyclades and the next route found themselves in front of shut down ferries “without warning.” They complained that they heard about the sailing ban from reporters at the port.
They were ultimately officially informed of delays affecting all Aegean islands departures lasting at least until 1 p.m.

Greek holidaymakers and tourists were left waiting and complained that there should have been informed much earlier about the ban.

The Port Authority announced that the ban is in effect for Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio until 1 pm, when it will be reassessed. Ferries from Rafina to Marmari in Evia operate normally, ERT reported.
It should be noted that already on Thursday, at least three ferries sailing in the Aegean Sea had reportedly problems to approach and dock to the islands ports due to very rough sea.

Meteorologists had warned since Thursday morning of gale-force winds with gusts reaching 9 to 10 Beaufort.

According to latest information by ERT, winds are forecast to temporary weaken as of 7 p.m. on Friday.
If you plant to travel by sea today, Friday or the following days, please, contact local port authorities or travel agents and shipping companies.
