2-month-old baby from Finland dead in Cretan hotel room

A 2-month-old baby was found dead on a bed in a hotel room by Chania. The young family was spending vacation on the island of Crete.

It was the 28-year-old father and the 26-year-old mother who found the baby unconscious when they woke up on Sunday morning, September 21.

They immediately called ambulance to take the infant to Chania Hospital, but it was already too late and doctors could only confirm the baby’s death, local media reported,.

The shocking incident took place in Kalyves, Apokoronas, where the family from Finland was spending their vacations.

According to state broadcast ERT, there was a crib in the room but the baby was found on the parents’ bed.

Forensic doctors speak of “death by suffocation” implying that the parents accidentally “slammed” the infant during their sleep. However, more tests have yet to be completed.

According to media information, the couple had gone to a wedding party the night before and when they returned they put the baby to sleep between them. One of the two “slammed” it in his sleep and the baby probably died of suffocation. Information also indicates that both had allegedly consumed a large amount of alcohol.

The parents were arrested on charges of manslaughter by negligence, while they underwent toxicology tests.

They were released at noon on Monday as the evidence, so far, has not revealed any signs of foul play.

They were released pending trial.
