Schools in Rhodes, Zakynthos closed on Friday as bad weather sweeps across Greece (Weather UDATE)

Schools on the islands of Rhodes and Zakynthos will remain closed on Friday as a precautionary measure, due to a bad weather front affecting large parts of the country.

The Rhodes Municipality said it had made the “preventive decision” to suspend classes following an emergency bulletin from the Greek  Meteorological Service, which warned of a sharp deterioration in weather conditions in the Dodecanese from the early hours of Friday.

In Zakynthos, local authorities also ordered school closures and urged residents to limit movements to what is strictly necessary.

The country’s Risk Assessment Committee reconvened on Thursday as severe weather conditions persist and are expected to continue until Friday.

According to its member scientists, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms will gradually decrease from Thursday evening, remaining mainly over central and eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

On Friday, the adverse weather is forecast to extend to the East Aegean islands and the Dodecanese.

The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection announced that the state mechanism remains on full operational readiness to address any emergencies that may arise.

Heavy rainfalls struck mainly the Ionians islands and western Peloponnese on Thursday while Athens was not exception to the rule, while the first snow fell on Mt Olympus.

EMY’s UPDATED WEATHER WARNING

According to the National Meteorological Service EMY, Friday, October 3, will begin with heavy rainfalls and storms.

EMY’s weather Red Alert warning (details on KTG) update, heavy rainfalls, storms and local hailfalls are expected:

until Friday afternoon in the Dodecanese
until noon in eastern Macedonia, Thrace and the islands of the Eastern Aegean
and until the morning hours in central Macedonia and the northernmost islands of the Cyclades.

The phenomena will be particularly intense in eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the islands of the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese and temporarily in central Macedonia and the northernmost islands of the Cyclades. In the rest of the eastern mainland and the southern Aegean there will be periods of improved weather. Temporary snowfalls will be noted in the mountainous areas in the North.

Winds will blow in most areas from the west-northwest and in the easternmost parts of the country from southerly directions 4B to 6B, in the seas locally with 7 Beaufort.

The temperature will drop slightly in most areas.
