Parents abandon autistic son in daycare center

Parents in the port city of Patras, western Greece, refused last Friday, to pick up their 17-year-old autistic son from daycare center at the end of the day.

When the center personnel called the father he told them he could not because “I have work, I can’t come” as he reportedly said.

On her part also the mother refused to pick up the child saying “I took care of him for seventeen years. I can’t do it anymore.”

The boy, who is on the autism spectrum with high functionality, participates once a week in a session at a specific center.

Local media noted that the parents are divorced and that the former couple’s relationship is very tense.

The child stayed at the daycare center under the supervision of a social worker and the psychologist of the facility and remained there until he was transferred to the Patras Police.

Around 10:00 at night, the boy ended up temporarily with his grandmother, who was the only one from the minor’s family environment who rushed to pick him.

PS what can one say about a state that hardly takes care of the vulnerable and their families?

  1. KTG, no EU states truly take care of the vulnerable. and woe to the children who are unlucky enough to end up in “Care centres” such as in the UK, where terrible things happen. Thankfully there is a grandmother who rushed to take him!

  2. Wow. His parents abandoned him with no warning and you’re blaming the state? Are they not responsible for him? What kind of parents would do that in the first place? In any case, if an abandoned child or young person with a disability has to go into state care that takes time to arrange. I hope his grandmother can care for him but I cannot imagine the devastating trauma his parents have caused by abandoning their autistic child.
