Attica, Patmos and Leros declared in state of emergency over water shortages

The process of declaring a state of emergency due to water shortages in the islands of Leros and Patmos, and Attica has been completed with the signing of the relevant ministerial decisions by the Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou.

The declaration of a state of emergency in Attica is based on hydrological data and scientific criteria. It also prioritizes the implementation of critical infrastructure projects, such as reservoirs, networks, and reinforcement of reserves, to safeguard water supply in the medium and long term and ensure the uninterrupted provision of water for drinking and irrigation.

The state of emergency represents the government’s last opportunity to complete projects quickly and decisively to address water shortages and protect Attica before it is too late. It does not involve any restrictive measures affecting citizens, government said in official press releases.
