Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY) issued an emergency bulletin warning of strong weather phenomena with heavy rainfalls and storms over Christmas.
The weather deterioration is forecast to start in the evening hours of today, Tuesday, December 23, in the area of the Ionian Sea.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, December 24, the strong phenomena will gradually expand throughout the western country, in areas of central and northern mainland Greece and in the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean Sea.
A weakening of the strong phenomena is forecast in the West on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, December 24-25, and in the rest of the areas on the afternoon of Christmas Day.
EMY Weather Warning
Strong rainfalls and storms are predicted in places:
In the Ionian Sea from the evening hours today, Tuesday, until late at night tomorrow, Wednesday, (Christmas Eve).
In Epirus, western Thessaly (regional units of Karditsa and Trikala), western and central Sterea (regional units of Etoloakarnania, Evrytania and Phokida) and western Peloponnese from tomorrow, Wednesday, at noon until the early hours of Christmas Day, Thursday, December 25, 2025.
In Western Macedonia on the night of Christmas Eve.
In Central Macedonia from the early afternoon of Wednesday until the afternoon on Christmas Day.
In Eastern Macedonia and the islands of the north-eastern Aegean from tomorrow, Wednesday, in the evening until Christmas afternoon.
Winds
Winds will be blowing with:
6 Beaufort in South-East directions in the Ionian Sea from noon on Tuesday, December 23, to the morning hours of Wednesday, December 24.
6-7 Beaufort from North-east directions in the North Aegean Sea on Thursday, December 25.
Snow
According to the meteo service of the National Observatory of Athens, snowfall is expected:
In the highlands of Epirus and Macedonia mainly as well as in the semi-mountainous areas and in the evening hours temporary in lowland areas of Thrace, on Thursday, December 25, 2025.
