95-year-old woman sets herself on fire in western Athens

A 95-year-old woman has set herself on fire outside a store in Egaleo suburb of western Athens on Wednesday morning.

The woman was taken to Attico Hospital and she is in critical condition.

The shocking incident occurred at 11 o’ clock on Wednesday morning at the intersection of Papanastasiou and Artakis streets.

The woman doused herself with flammable liquid and set herself on fire, in front of a store in the area.

Passersby and residents of the neighborhood rushed to help the woman, throwing water and using even a fire extinguisher at her.

Police forces also rushed to the scene.

Prior to setting herself on fire, the woman who is known in the neighborhood, was seen walking with some shopping bags.

The causes and exact circumstances of the incident are being investigated by the competent authorities.
