Farmers lift roadblocks ahead of meeting with PM on Jan 18

Protesting farmers in Greece lifted their roadblocks in central, north and south parts of the country on Thursday after the Prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis agreed to meet with them on upcoming Monday, January 19, under this particular precondition and a smaller number of representatives than originally planned.

Traffic on highways, side roads and customs crossings flows without any problems, even though the protesters are keeping their tractors and agricultural machinery on the sides of the roads.

At the meeting of representatives of major blocs of central Greece late on Wednesday, farmers and livestock breeders decided to accept the Premiers’ preconditions and also to decrease the number of the delegation down to 25+5 “observers.”

The meeting with so-called “hardliners” of the primary sector is scheduled at 13:00 on Monday.

PM Mitsotakis met with another group of farmers – 25 people, protesters but also individuals – from several parts of the country on Tuesday, with some internet users recognizing the participants from Crete as “local officials with ruling New Democracy.”

Farmers have been on the roads since November 30, 2025, demanding more government subsidies to deal with the high production cost, tax decreases and cheaper fuel and pension increases. They now also question the EU-Mercosur agreement fearing it will put another tombstone on the grave of agriculture in Greece.

So far, Mitsotakis’ government has offered a list of measures saying “there is no fiscal room for more.”

The question is what can he offer on Monday to the sector who has been “loyal ND-votes” since ages.
