Gale-force winds, heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms in the last two days have caused a lot of and serious damages in Greece, especially on the islands of the Ionian Sea such as Zakynthos and the Aegean Sea like in Crete as well as in Ilia region in Peloponnese.

A bridge collapsed in Messara due to bad weather, while a tornado hit Ierapetra causing serious damages to greenhouses and houses in the area of Livadia.


Landslides were recorded in the municipality of Phaistos, on the road from Kamares to Vorizia, where a rock fell, resulting in traffic being disrupted.
With the first light of day on Friday, farmers realized the extent of the disaster, with the mayor of the area, Manolis Fragoulis, noting that in some cases of greenhouse facilities, the destruction is complete. The strong winds tore down nylon and metal structures, leaving behind images of destruction.
Due to the force of the wind, power cables fell on a greenhouse, resulting in a power outage in the area for a long time. The intensity of the phenomena is also shown by the fall of a windmill, which collapsed from its base.
According to media information, there were several minor problems recorded on the island, with most of them located in the hinterland of Heraklion and the southern part of Crete.
The rainfall on the island began early last night, which soon turned into a storm, while the gale-force winds made their presence strong.
At the same time, on the road to the Tympaki land redevelopment project, the bridge was “cut” in two at night. As reported by e-mesara.gr and cretalive.gr, the incident occurred around midnight and the competent municipal services immediately rushed to the scene and closed the road to avoid accidents.

Landslides in Agia Triada and Bochali – Soil and rocks “invaded” a house

A dangerous landslide occurred on thursday, February 12, late at night in the area of Agia Triada in Zakynthos, causing intense concern among the authorities and residents.
A large volume of soil and rocks broke away from the mountain, resulting in the materials being carried into a house, causing significant damage to it and to another house. For precautionary reasons due to the landslide, the two houses in Zakynthos were evacuated immediately.
According to information from imerazante.gr, a dog was crushed by the soil. Firefighters are working at the scene, while a team from EMAK rescuers rushed to the area from Athens.
The EMAK crew carried out thorough searches with a specially trained dog, in order to rule out the possibility that a person was buried under the materials brought.
On Friday morning, new landslides were detected in the Bohali area and above the Zakynthos Open-Air Municipal Theater, where the soil gave way and ended up in the theater’s stands.
The searches continue with increased vigilance, while the Authorities remain at the sites until the area is fully secured.
Ileia, Peloponnese

Rock threatens to fall on houses in Katakolo, while the level of Alfeios river rises dangerously.
The rock has the size of a small truck and then houses have been evacuated.

Trees have fallen on house and subsidence of the earth with the phenomenon to be reportedly ongoing.
The area has been hit by the bad weather for the third consecutive day.


At the same time, the water level in Alfeios has risen significantly.

There was also a wall collapse on a car, requiring intervention to free two elderly people, who were not injured.

Other areas have been flooded.
Authorities are closely monitoring the development of the rainfalls as the fear of new landslides remains, especially in the event of worsening weather conditions, although the bad weather seems to be gradually weakening.
