The Bank of Greece (BoG) announced on Tuesday that tourism revenues totaled 23,626 billion euros in 2025, up by 9.4% relative to 2024.The increase is attributed to the number of tourists visiting Greece: they reached 38 million (37.98 million travelers) and was increased by 5.6% compared to 2024.
According to data from the BoG, travel traffic through airports recorded an increase of 5.6%, while that through road border posts increased by 6.9%. During the period under review, travel traffic from EU-27 countries amounted to 22.4 million travelers, increased by 2.8% compared to 2024, while travel traffic from other countries increased by 10.0% to 15.56 million travelers. Travel from the euro area countries increased by 7.1%, while that from the EU-27 countries outside the euro area decreased by 5.7%.
In particular, travel from Germany increased by 10.2% to 5.9 million travelers, while travel from France decreased by 0.5% to 1.98 million travelers. Travel from Italy increased by 8.6% to 2.2 million travelers. Regarding other countries, travel from the United Kingdom increased by 7.6% to 4.9 million travelers. Travel from the United States also increased by 0.2% to 1.55 million travelers. Finally, the travel traffic from Russia amounted to 21.5 thousand travelers.
As for the increase in revenues, this development is due to the increase in both receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries by 6.1%, which amounted to 12.7 billion euros, and receipts from residents of other countries by 14.7%, which amounted to 9.9 billion euros.
Receipts from residents of the euro area countries amounted to 9.9 billion euros, up by 4.0%, while receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries outside the euro area increased by 14.1% and amounted to 2.8 billion euros.
Receipts from Germany increased by 2.2% to 3.8 billion euros, as did receipts from France, which increased by 5.9% to 1.33 billion euros. Receipts from Italy also increased by 5.1% to 1.28 billion euros. Among other countries, receipts from the United Kingdom increased by 18.5% to 3.8 billion euros, while receipts from the United States increased by 8.5% to 1.7 billion euros. Finally, receipts from Russia amounted to 23.8 million euros.
As a result of the above, the travel balance showed a surplus of 20.25 billion euros, compared to a surplus of 18.8 billion euros in 2024. Travel receipts increased by 2.033 billion euros or 9.4%, reaching 23.626 billion euros, while travel payments also increased by 565.5 million euros or 20.2%, reaching 3.4 billion euros. The increase in travel receipts came from the increase in incoming travel traffic by 5.6%, as well as the average expenditure per trip by 3.8%. Net receipts from the provision of travel services offset the deficit in the goods balance by 59.9% and contributed by 89.0% to total net receipts from services.
