A viral track repeating just two words,“Yanis Varoufakis,” is spreading across Russia’s clubland. Created by a Moscow DJ, the tune has taken off among zoomers, with critics linking its appeal to a revival of 90s/early 2000s techno, writes Brian McDonald, Russia-based Irish journalist.
The irony is that most listeners likely have no idea who Yianis Varoufakis is, they just like the rhythm of the name.

In case you’re new here and too young to remember, iconic and visionary Yanis Varoufakis was Finance Minister from Jan to June 2015, when left-wing SYRIZA was in the Greek government.

He tired to make a deal with Greece’s European lenders but ended up with his own resignation and the country with a third bailout agreement.

I remember him very well
Lecturing EU lenders that they were doing everythung wrong and how they all should change their economic system before his government rightly dismissed him on the spot
This isn’t the place to recall all the events of 2015 and how German & French banks were saved at the expense of Greek people, as fellow EU countries demanded unfair, harsh austerity while happily selling their submarines and other military materials to Greece, a country who was strapped for cash. So let me just say: you’re entitled to your opinion.
And also, I beg to differ.
I remember that he was the only one who showed any integrity at a time when Greeks actually believed they could change their political system. That was before the Tsipras sell out of course…
