Taxi drivers in Greece on 24h strike, March 23

Taxi drivers throughout Greece will launch a 24-hour strike on Monday, March 23, 2026, the day the controversial bill of the Transport Ministry will be voted discussed and voted for in the Parliament.

The strike starts at 6:00 a.m. on Monday and ends at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 24.

In Athens taxi drivers will hold a gathering at 10:30 outside the union’s offices SATA and then march to the parliament at around 12 o’ clock noon.

Their colleagues from Thessaloniki are also expected to join the protest.

Main points of disagreement is the mandatory transition to electric mobility from 2026 for new vehicles, with the sector requesting an extension of the measure at least until 2035. At the same time, strong reactions are being expressed regarding the possibility that private cars and vans will have to carry out urban passenger transport, arguing that this degrades the work of taxis.

The strike is part of the reactions to the rejection of the industry’s basic demands. As the president of the Thessaloniki Taxi Association “Hermes”, Klimis Leontiadis, pointed out to state-run news agency amna, approximately 2,000 taxi professionals in the prefecture are directly affected by the promoted regulations.

Taxi drivers in Athens have warned to continue their protests with several strikes also during the tourism season.
