Construction site and fiber optics project bring road to collapse

A retaining wall at a construction site in Toumba area of Thessaloniki, northern Greece, on Monday morning, led to collapse of a road, with the effect that a private car fell in, while other parked vehicles were hanging in the air.

According to local media information, the subsidence was caused by a water pipe breaking during work to install fiber optics.

Due to the subsidence of the road surface, the parked vehicles are hanging in the air, while a car fell onto the construction site.

Nobody was injured.

Police arrested a 28-year-old man who was responsible for the fiber optics project.

It remains unknown what caused the subsidence, which will be investigated by the competent authorities.
