A wildfire started at the site Mavrovouni on the mountain of Parnitha in northern Athens, at 11:30 on Thursday morning. It was the first wildfire in Attica in 2026.
According to the civil protection service, the fire started in a remote, inaccessible location but was quickly spotted and contained, thanks to a prompt response by fire fighting forces., particularly the aircraft and the teams on foot.
indeed a force of 95 firefighters with 22 vehicles, five teams of forest commandos on foot, four aircraft and a drone was deployed against the flames, assisted by volunteers and local authority water tankers.
The fire was contained and had no active front by Thursday afternoon thus with no risk that it would spread further.,
The Parnitha Avenue, which was earlier closed above the level of the cable car station, was reopened.
A team of arson investigators was immediately sent to the scene to investigate the causes of the blaze. According to state-run news agency amnagr, evidence pointing to electricity cables from the network supply the casino.
