FedEx ceases its operation at Thessaloniki airport

A new blow to the airport of “Macedonia” in Thessaloniki and the local economy after courier company FedEx announced it is ceasing its operation there.

The last day of FedEx operation will be May 31, 2026, and all procedures will be transferred to international airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” in Athens.

The decision comes a few days after low-budget airline Ryanair announced it will close its base at Thessaloniki airport due toi the rise of fees by managing company Fraport Greece.

it is not known whether FedEx’s decision to remove the company’s direct air transport from Thessaloniki and everything will go through Athens, is related to Fraport charges..

According to state broadcaster ERT, FedEx had already made some investment in Markopoulos area, close to Athens airport a while ago.

The news of FedEx’s departure from Thessaloniki airport was announced during a meeting at the Professional Chamber of Commerce, by the president of the Customs Brokers of Thessaloniki, Giorgos Kosmidis.

ERTnews reported that FexEx’s decision was already unofficially known to local businesses since late April.

The FexEx decision implies, first of all, delays in the delivery of packages to Thessaloniki, as they will be cleared through customs in Athens and possibly an increase in shipping prices.

Η εταιρεία θα διατηρήσει ωστόσο τις αποθήκες που έχει στην Πυλαία της Θεσσαλονίκης.

It also means that customs officers will lose their jobs, as there were 100 customs clearances from FedEx at the “Macedonia” airport per day. As announced yesterday at the Chamber of Commerce, the 6 employees who work at “Macedonia” airport on behalf of FedEx will be left without work.

The company will, however, maintain the warehouses it has in Pylaia, Thessaloniki.

However, this is the second blow in a short period of time at the “Macedonia” airport, after that of Ryanair, which also affects the economic life of the city, as there will be a degradation of the services that the businesses will offer.

Yesterday, Wednesday, a new announcement by Ryanair attacked Fraport Greece accusing it of operating as “a monopoly”, calling on the Greek government “to break up the Fraport Greece monopoly, which will bring much-needed competition to the Greek aviation market.”
