Submarine entangled in trawl nets during Navy exercise in the Aegean

A Navy submarine reportedly entangled in trawl nets of fishing boats between the islands of Andros and Tinos in the Aegean Sea.

Despite the accident, the submarine did not lose its propulsion and has already surfaced, thus continuing its participation in the exercise “KATAIGIS 26” – STORM 26- , sources told media.

The submarine of Papanikolis class type 214 apparently fell into the trawl nets on Thursday. Mau 14, 2026.

The watercraft was in the specific sea area of the Aegean Sea as part of the “STORM 26” exercise.

According to initial information, the submarine did not lose its propulsion, and has already surfaced, according to OnAlert.gr.

A Coast Guard vessel was also located in the area.

Navy sources note that: “In the morning hours of Thursday, May 14, 2026, during the national Exercise “KATAIGIS 26″, a submarine diving in the Cyclades maritime area perceived the presence of a fishing vessel near it and proceeded with all the required safety procedures.”

In this Navy exercise STORM 26, the units of the Fleet Headquarters practice realistic scenarios and the Submarines operate in areas with intense shipping traffic, the sources noted.

According to the same sources, it is noted that the submarine continues its participation in the exercise as normal.
