Rethymno: Kourtaliotiko Gorge opens tomorrow with controlled access and a 5 euro ticket

This year’s operation of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge begins with a new organized management system and a 5 euro entrance ticket, as part of the effort to protect the natural environment and better control the increased traffic in recent years.

The new system is implemented in collaboration with the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA) with the municipality of Agios Vasilios and provides for controlled access with daily presence of security and cleaning personnel, in order to ensure the smooth operation of the area and the protection of the ecosystem.

The implementation of this specific framework comes as a response to the intense and often uncontrolled flow of visitors in previous years, which had caused environmental burden, waste accumulation and safety issues, the managing company said.

Infrastructure upgrade and security enhancement projects
In parallel, within the framework of the cooperation between the two bodies, infrastructure upgrade and security enhancement projects are progressing, with interventions on the paths, new support facilities and improvement of services to visitors.

The revenue from the 5 euro ticket will be used for the maintenance of the gorge, environmental protection actions, as well as for studies to highlight the wider area up to the Preveli Palm Forest, with the aim of a more sustainable management model for one of the most important natural destinations in Crete.
