Average fuel price in Greece over €2.18/l; Crisis is imported, says gov’t

The average price of unleaded gasoline in the Dodecanese Prefecture was 2.185 euros per liter on Monday, May 18, 2026 and 2.161 euros per liter in Kefalonia for 95 octane. While the price at gas stations in Attica was as high as 2,170 euros, where the average price was 2.113 per liter.

This means that a vehicle owner who needs to fill up their tank this week will need from 73.95 euros to 147.91 euros, based on the average price of 95 octane unleaded.

Small city cars: 35 – 45 liters (73.95 – 95 euros)
Small and medium-sized cars (Hatchback/Sedan): 45 – 55 liters (95 – 116.21 euros)
Large family cars and SUVs: 55 – 70+ liters (116.21 – 147.91 euros)

These are prices that have already exceeded the estimates of market people and are causing anxiety among consumers about what is yet to come, as the price of oil has today shot above 110 dollars per barrel.

“The price of gasoline will exceed 2.10 euros this week,” said reportedly the president of the Attica gas stations, Nikos Papageorgiou, in an interview on Monday morning.

However, the reality that consumers see is that gas stations have already exceeded this “milestone”.

According to market insiders, the rise in prices at gas stations is due to the insecurity and uncertainty that prevails in the Gulf region, against the backdrop of the delayed US-Iran peace talks and the continued near-closure of the vital Strait of Hormuz.

In fact, scenarios for high prices throughout the summer have become a given, at an international level, even in the event that a definitive solution is found on the war front.

Thus, many gas station owners continue to increase prices to “cover future losses,” sources noted, according to cnngreece.gr.

PS We, Greeks, should not worry about the ongoing high cost of living and inflation at 5.4% in April, because as Deputy president of the government Costis Hatzidakis reiterated re-chewing the known claim:

“The crisis in fuel, supermarkets and energy is imported”

We may have been listening to this excuse by conservative New Democracy and we will be in the future because this is the “only universal ND truth” whether there is a global crisis or not.

  1. Try Paxos – we have 2 gas stations on the island, both charging the same price of €2.22 for unleaded, & it’s been that price for several weeks now. Regardless of uncertainty in the markets it always goes up during the summer season, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see €2.40 this year
