Greece’s Greeks’ “Greek Week”, the peak of the summer holidays season,  is the vacation week that ends or starts on August 15th. It is the summer high week, when every Greek feels obliged to be on vacation. For early leavers summer holidays will end today, for late leavers next weekend. In times of prosperity Greece’s Greeks’ used to celebrate “Greek month-August”. However in Greece’s of loans and austerity the maximum duration Greece’s “Greek Week” is ten days.

During Greece’s Greeks’ Greek Week, there are no news; the politics talk shows have a traditional 2,5 months summer break  anyway. Politicians are resting on a sunbed at a sunny beach. So there are no news during Greeks’ Greek Week.  Except politicians’s wishes on the occation of the day – Virgin Mary help us!

Even the Sunday newspapers had nothing important to report.

On this week, traditionally the city of Athens is a waste land. No cars around, no sound. And the shops are closed. ‘You can play football on Panepistimiou Street’ is the line we hear every August 15, when reporters want to demonstrate that all residents have abandoned the city.

Even the public transport schedule is on a week end mood. Monday’s schedule operates like Sunday, and Tuesday schedule like Saturday.

If you happen to be in Athens during Greece’s Greeks’ Greek Week, you can meet some Greeks at the beaches or in churches – due to Assumption of Virgin Mary liturgy.

What if the euro is about to collapse? We celebrate Greece’s Greeks’ Greek Week. Happy August 15th!

PS Today’s temperatures will be about 34 degrees Celsius. The wind is blowing from NNE to SSW. Therefore Athens’ south beaches are expected to be clean. I’m going to check this out personally…
