Athens: Greek Honey Festival, Dec 2-4/11

Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Very Mix

Mmmm…. December is the month we crave for delicious honey, we normally add to Greek Christmas bakery. Pies and cookies, and even meat and poultry dishes glazed with honey or surrounded by honey sauce. Not to forget mentioning the many traditional Greek dishes with honey. And then a light honey syrup for pancakes or a simple slice of fresh bread with butter and a tea spoon full of honey.  Did you know that the good medicine for a soar throat is warm milk with honey? Oh, yes! It is the season that urges us to something soft and sweet…  So the Festival of Greek Honey and Bee Products comes right in time. It’s the largest event of this kind in Greece, with local producers from across the country. An excellent opportunity to buy honey, taste several varieties and get to learn the multiple health benefits of the golden product of bees. Apart from all these, we should support local producers, especially in times of this harsh economic crisis, shouldn’t we?

Honey Syrup Recipe

I maybe able to prepare quick but complicated dishes and sweets but I never managed to cook a simple syrup out of sugar and water, a syrup often required in many Greek sweets. So my rescue from the crystallized disaster was a syrup made of honey!

I just need to cook for a couple of minutes cook 2 cups of honey with 1/2 cup of water with a cinnamon stick, orange and lemon peels and a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice. It never fails!

BTW: My favorite honey is the dark green honey made from pine or fir trees. I have a wonderful recipe for an Oh-so-melting Honey Parfait :)
