Financial Crimes Units Investigate Bribes in Athens … Morgue
Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Very Mix
I would have never thought that one has to pay bribes also for the dead. But Greek reality shows that also this can happen. Financial Crimes Units (SDOE) took under the magnifying glass the bank accounts of staff working at the Mortuary in Athens. The investigation followed a report by the inspector of Public Administration expressing suspicion on certain transactions and complaints to the Ministry of Justice, that private persons were allegedly performing autopsies at the Laboratory of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of the Medical School of Athens University.
The SDOE investigation showed that bribes between €50 and €300 were given to mortuary staff for the “preferential” treatment - or better say: for a quicker release – of the corpses. Further it showed that the onwer of a funeral service bribed a mortuary official with 180 EUR.
The SDOE is now trying to find out, what amounts of bribes changed hands under the morgue table, without recipt and Value Added Tax…
