Greek FM on ICJ Ruling: “Issue of German War Compensations Remains Open”

Greek Foreign Ministry issued a statement commenting of the ruling of the International Court of Justice on Italian and Greek court decisions asking compensation for WWII Nazi atrocities. The FM stated that concerning the German compensations to Greece for damages during the occupation remains open.
Here is just an excerpt from the Greek Foreign Ministry press release - unfortunately there was no English translation on its website
“However, it is important that the Court finds that the fact that a State enjoys immunity before national courts of another state this does not affect the question of international responsibility and the concomitant obligation to provide compensation. Also, the Court, referring to the issue of compensation for Italian prisoners of war and other requirements of Italian society, which have not been resolved, said that these issues could be resolved through bilateral negotiations. In this way the Court confirms that these issues have not been closed.
The Greek government will study the decision carefully, in light of the constant and longitudinal position that the issue of German compensations remains open.”

That’s because this is an issue that is played out only for domestic political reasons and therefore only to the Greek audience. Look back over the years and you see that most of the times this flairs up when it is politically convenient. And no more convenient moment than now.
It is, one of those items that is sure to wipe of everything else from the frontpages for a short while. And it is now even better, because it can direct the anger of the people away from the nomenklatura and on to foreigners. And it works.
