Greek MP Sent One Million Euro Abroad

A Member of the Greek parliament sent abroad one million euro. To a foreign bank. To deposit it abroad and save it in case of a Greek bankruptcy. The male/female MP sent this money abroad in the dramatic month of May 2011, when the country was struggling against a bankruptcy.

This revealation was made by Panagiotis Nikoloudis, President of the Authority Against Money Laundering. However Nikoloudis did not revealed the MP’s name or the party or the ideological sphere, where he/she bleongs.

Speaking to the Transparency Committee of the Parliament, Nikoloudis said that people from several social classes withdrew their money from the banks and sent them abroad. “As forthe political world, I noticed one , she or he, who sent 1,000,000 euro abroad. In proportion to the 300 MPs, this is 1:300. It’s not a sin to send money abroad, it’s not illegal in the formal sense of the law.” (Proto Thema & All Greek media)

Of course, it is not. Maybe FinMin Venizelos had this specific MP in mind when he urged Greeks this morning to bring their money back in order to boost Greek economy.

  1. Are there any talks that the people should overthrow the government?

Or the people are still divided, as not a small portion of them actually want this austerity to happen as a way to reform?

    • no such talks, much to my knowledge. Unfortunately some of these austerity measures would be th eonly way to trimm down state expenditures. Sad, isn’t it?

  2. When it is all so legal and above board could this elected and public person not be named? Or was it just something k. Nikoloudis could not prove?
What Greece needs is names, facts, hard figures to make a start at cleansing and a beginning onto the road to normality and out of this crazy reality of accusations, suggestions, lies and suspicion.

  3. The majority of politicans, whatever country they’re from look after themselves first and foremost, they care little or nothing about ordinary people. If one MP has sent money abroad, no doubt Switzerland, then it’s a certainty many others have, along with the wealthy. The worst for monetary self-interest are those in Brussels, MEPs voted for a pay rise, they don’t give a damn about the people of Europe, they could not care less if we all starved…..Can someone please explain why the Greek people are so beloved of the euro/EU and afraid to go back to the drachma, I’m not being nasty, it just baffles me, especially knowing the disgraceful treatment the EU/IMF are dishing out, these pernicious organisations only care about the French/German banks (and themselves)that hold Greece’s debt. How many Greeks have to die before they say enough is enough to these people. IMO protests will achieve nothing, the terms won’t alter, until Greece comes out of the euro/EU it’ll just more of the same. Or until the Merkel/Sarkozy decide enough has been done to secure their banks, then they’ll sling Greece out without a backward glance.

  4. KTG, have you heard anything about this new political party. My neighbor seems to think it’s the wave of the new Greece since they want to eliminate the immunity from parliament, and they won’t take any salaries. Can you confirm this? Looks interesting, but my Greek is not that good unfortuantely to read with big words.

He said it’s made up of retired Greek military officers. I know many Greeks are afraid of military but could this party be worse than the ND/Pasok we had for so long? I’d be curious to know your thoughts on them so I could go back to my neighbor with a good response.
