Earthquake 4.4R rattles Athens

An earthquake with magnitude 4.4 on the Richter scale shook the broader Attica region. The tremor occurred at o4:56 in the morning and lasted 2 to 3 seconds. According to Geodynamic Institute of Athens Observatory, the epicenter was 4 km SE of Pikermi and 22 km East of Athens. It had a depth of 10 km.

The earthquake was particularly felt in the Greek capital, and many residents in the north but also south suburbs of Athens report in social media that they felt the earthquake while sleeping. Some post that they jumped from their beds and others that some items felt down.

No damages have been recorded.

The area has not a history of big earthquakes, with a 4.5R to have occurred in March 2005. Seismologists observe the phenomenon.

PS I’m terribly sorry to officially declare that KTG heard of the earthquake as early as 9:30 this morning. A quick check showed that neither flowerpots or nor books felt victim to the tremor. Also the two cats had nothing relevant to report.
