Greek Finance Ministry felt the need to inform about the content of the talks Minister Yanis Varoufakis had with IMF’s managing director Christine Lagarde and officials of the US-Administration on Sunday and Monday in Washington. It is not common that the ministry issues a long press release on content of talks, but this one seems to be a response to foreign media reports that:
1. Lagarde asked for “pensions cuts” and mass lay-offs (DPA)
2. US-administration advised Greece to “fully commit at the negotiations” (Reuters)
According to a press release uploaded on the Finance Ministry’s website:
Lagarde told Varoufakis that the IMF is willing to show “utmost flexibility” on Greece’s reform proposals.
As for the meetings with US-officials (deputy Treasury secretary Nathan Sheets and Obama’s consultant Caroline Atkinson), the press release noted among others that:
“For their part, US officials explained the importance President Barack Obama administration gives to a “honest deal” between Greece and its partners/institutions and preserving the unity of the Eurozone. They stressed that the US government wishes to play the role of a “honest mediator» (honest broker) to achieve such a solution as soon as possible, pushing all negotiating parties towards this direction.”
What does “utmost flexibility” mean in Euros and Cents?
Exactly. 0.0
