For the first time in its history, Greece will have a female Prime Minister, albeit PM in an interim government. After fruitless negotiations to form a new coalition government following PM Tsipras resignation, the President of the Republic named Vassiliki Thanou, top judge of the Supreme to form a caretaker government and lead the country to the early elections next month.
Vassiliki Thanou is considered as “an anti-austerity advocate who has argued against wage cuts for judges and court officials,” due to her role as President of the Greek Association of Judges and Prosecutors (SAD), a position she has been holding since 2012.
She will be sworn in as the country’s first female prime minister at 8 p.m. local time today Thursday.
Thanou is expected to announce the members of her interim government on Friday, the new cabinet will be sworn in on the same day. Several names have been leaked to the press as candidates for the interim government’s top positions, the name of Chouliarakis has been mentioned as Finance Minister. Giorgos Chouliarakis was member of Tsipras’ negotiation team with the creditors.
Who is
Vassiliki Thanou-Christophilou, 65, was appointed the President of the Court of Cassation, one of Greece’s three supreme courts, on 1st July 2015.
Since 2009, Thanou-Christophilou has taught civil law at the National School of Judges in Greece. Since 2012, she has also been the President of the Greek Association of Judges and Prosecutors (SAD), having first been elected in 2012 for a two-year term, and re-elected for the same period in 2014.
Thanou-Christophilou entered the judiciary body in 1975, and became the President of the Court of First Instance in 1992. She became an appellate in 1996 and subsequently President of the Appeals Court in 2005. She became a judge in the Court of Cassation in 2008, and Vice President of the Court in 2014.
On 1 July 2015, she succeeded Athanasios Koutroumanos as President of the Court of Cassation, following the former’s retirement. Her appointment came at the recommendation of Nikos Paraskevopoulos, SYRIZA’s Minister of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights. Thanou-Christophilou therefore became the 42nd President of the Court of Cassation since 1835, and the second ever female President after Rena Asimakopoulou. Due to her seniority as a President of a Greek supreme court, she is also the President of the Supreme Electoral Court.
Thanou-Christophilou is married and has three children. She speaks also French and English fluently. (source)
Thanou’s appointment comes seven days after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras resigned following a rebellion launched by a part of his own SYRIZA lawmakers who repeatedly refused to vote in favor of the 3. bailout and the accompanying austerity measures.

Thanou’s appointment ends a week of fruitless negotiations as top opposition party leaders Meimarakis from conservative New Democracy and Lafazanis from radical-left Popular Unity tried to form a coalition government without success.
The date of the snap elections has not been announced yet. the majority of media tip on September 20th, however Popular Unity and To Potami favor September 27th in order to have more time to prepare for the elections.
Bravo! Yet no elections are necessary any-more as hopefully she is smart enough to throw all supporters of austerity into custody-prison, to break all resistance first Tsipraki but for now it will be good for the parliamentary inquiry of Stournaras.
