One of the winners of Miss Tourism Universe, a young Greek woman from Thessaloniki, denounced that she was under pressure by some judges and sponsors to go out with them in order to receive high scores.
In the contest that was held in Lebanon in September 2016, Konstantina Karkani, 19, won the title Miss Tourism 2nd Runner Up.
Speaking to website Seleo.gr, Karkani said that in three cases judges and sponsors asked her for a date threatening her with low scores if she would refuse.
One case occurred during the interview the judges had separately with the beauty contestants. “At some point, one of the interviewers began to ask more personal things, such as if I would go with him for a drink. I told them politely ‘no’ and I left. A sponsor, who was also a judge, met me at the hotel hallway and told me “if you don’t go out with me for dinner, I will put zero score for you., I replied “never mind, I like cookies” and left. Also, I received a phone call with the offer that I visit someone in his hotel room. I just hung up,” Karkani described her unpleasant experience.
It looks as if also other contestants had similar experiences and that some of them allegedly gave in to the pressure, however “without securing high scores.”
