A mafia-style execution outside a public school, an unprecedented act of crime in Greece. A 47-year-old man was shot dead in Glyka Nera northeast of Athens, right after he dropped his son off at the primary school.
The incident occurred around 8.15 a.m. on Wednesday shortly after the victim dropped his child off at the 2nd primary school of the area.
The 47-year-old was inside his car when a car with at least two passengers approached him and fired more at least nine shots. The attackers were reportedly wearing masks and got off the car before they started to shot.
Paramedics of an ambulance could only confirm his death.
One woman was slightly injured after a bullet ricocheted off a nearby wall. The mother had also brought her child to school. The woman was transferred to a hospital in the Greek capital. According to media, the bullet had gone next to her heart, “it is a miracle” she survived. Doctors say her life is not in danger.
The incident occurred while the pupils were standing in the school yard for the morning prayer. Children and parents standing outside started to run away screaming, eye-witnesses told media.
Police found an abandoned vehicle near the scene that was doused in gasoline and set on fire. The suspects are believed to have escaped on motorbikes.
Witnesses told media and police, that three well-built men were seen on two motorbikes near the school before the attack.
The victim, a body builder, was arrested in 2011 and accused of running a protection racket, involved in blackmails and execution of ‘death contracts.’ An attempt on his life was carried out in 2003.
Police investigates the killing and suspects a ‘death contract’. Cartridges of 9mm were found in the crime scene.
