An F-16 fighter jet of the Turkish Air Force flew at a height of just 3,200 feet – approximately 975 meters – over the Greek island of Farmakonisi in the Eastern Aegean Sea on Tuesday morning. The fighter jet violated the Flight Information Region Athens at 10:55 a.m. and had Greek fighter jets take off to intercept it.
A pair of Turkish F-16 entered FIR Athens at 10:55 a.m. and exited at 11:10 a.m., the Greek General staff said in a statement adding that one of them flew over Farmakonisi.
The Turkish jets had no flight plan.
A day earlier, it was seven Turkish aircraft that violated the FIR Athens. It was 4 F-16, 2 F-4 and one CN-235. Four of the six fighter jets were reportedly armed.
Violations of FIR Athens by Turkish fighter jets are a common phenomenon but it looks that they get bolder day by day, as Ankara has increased and keep up the tension towards neighbor Greece.
