“Escape port to be built in Santorini” says Civil Protection Minister

Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vasilis Kikilias, announced on Monday the construction of a new port in Santorini as well as  the creation of an escape port in a safe location on the island, where passenger ships can dock in case of emergency.

The escape port is for the possibility of a tsunami and it will be built by the Greek Armed forces.

In an interview with ANT1 TV, Kikilias spoke about the seismic activity recorded in Santorini, the preventive measures taken by the State and the overall operational readiness of the state mechanism.

The Minister pointed out that there is the possibility of a larger earthquake in the region, which makes constant vigilance and timely preparation necessary.

“A large earthquake can cause extensive damage or even a tsunami. Residents of Santorini and the surrounding islands should know that, in the event of a major earthquake, they should immediately leave coastal areas and move to safer, higher places,” Kikilias stressed.

The Minister emphasized that “scientists cannot make accurate predictions about earthquakes, but only estimates based on scientific data. This forces us as an organized State to take all the necessary preventive measures to protect citizens.”

Kikilias announced that, in addition to the new port to be built in Santorini, it was decided in consultation with the Prime Minister to create an escape port in a safe location on the island, where passenger ships can dock in case of emergency.
