Germany doesn’t exclude “orderly default” for Greece

Germany’s vice chancellor, Economy Minister Philipp Roesler breaks a taboo and speaks for the first time of a Greek ‘orderly default’. In a guest post to German conservative newspaper DIE WELT, Roesler wrote “In order to stabilize the Euro, there shouldn’t be thinking taboos anymore. If needed, there could be also an orderly insolvence of Greece, wenn the necessary instruments are available.”

In countries like Greece there are still insufficient consolidation efforts. People’s and markets’ confidence in the common currency sink. “The Greek government must know that we will make the planned aid conditional on reforms made by Greece itsslef,” so Roesler.

In addition, Roesler asked the establishment of a system of automatic sanctions, in order to avert the danger of political dilution.

“In case of violations, there must be hard constraints, such as a conditional approval for the disbursement of funds from EU structural funds. For continuing violations it may be necessary, even a temporary withdrawal of voting rights in the EU Council of Ministers, “Roesler wrote. 

 Philipp Roesler  is Chairman of the FDP, the neo-liberal coalition partner of Angela Merkel.
